#912: The spontaneous duet

I’m always amazed at how quickly kids can hear song lyrics and pick them up, ready to sing from memory. The Girl, especially, has this wonderful ability of being able to hear a song just once, and seemingly knowing most of the lyrics after that. Her brother either has some of that skill naturally, or she’s teaching him well.

One day, the funniest thing happened. They were both sitting in the same room, doing their own work separately, when the Boy started to quietly sing one of the songs from their CD “15 Now”. I didn’t know the song, but I was greatly amused to then hear a second voice chime in, picking up exactly where he paused, singing the next line. They went back and forth like that for a while, without any kind of discussion. It was the simplest thing to them, like carrying on a conversation, each person knowing exactly when to sing, and exactly when to stop to let their other person contribute. It was like finishing each other’s sentence, except in song.

It’s a  lovely sound, when kids seem to hit the right note, together.
